Survey Background

In 2015 Sustainable Surf conducted the first life cycle study of the carbon footprint of a surfboard. This study used a “cradle to gate” boundary condition, and tracked the emissions of surfboard production from raw materials extraction through to point of sale. Results showed that a Level One Ecoboard produced a 30% reduction in carbon footprint.

This new survey will complete our understanding of the “cradle to grave” carbon footprint of a surfboard. Every surfer uses their boards differently, with a different repair and replacement frequency. The survey asks questions about how often boards are repaired and/or replaced.

The study seeks responses from a broad range of surfers. From people who only have one board and surf occasionally, to those who have a full quiver of boards and surf daily. With a large sample size, we will be able to make statistical estimates of the carbon footprint of surfboards after they are purchased.

Each person who takes the survey will earn one entry to win a brand new Firewire Surfboard. An additional entry will be granted for those who go above and beyond by completing our bonus questions!
